چکیده

Sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum L.) juice is widely consumed by people of the tropics and subtropics. It has been used to cure jaundice and liver-related disorders in Indian systems of medicine. Its possible mechanism of action was examined in terms of antioxidant availability. The assays involved different levels of antioxidant action such as oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC), radical scavenging abilities using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH); 2,20-azobis-3-ethyl benzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid (ABTS); ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP); and protection of membranes examined by inhibition of lipid peroxidation. In addition, the content of phenols and total flavonoids were measured. The aqueous extracts of three varieties of sugarcane were studied. These varieties showed good antioxidant properties and were also able to protect against radiation induced DNA damage in pBR322 plasmid DNA and Escherishia coli cultures. In conclusion, the study reveals that the ability of sugarcane juice to scavenge free radicals, reduce iron complex and inhibit lipid peroxidation, may explain possible mechanisms by which sugarcane juice exhibits its beneficial effects in relation to its reported health benefits. 2007 Elsevier Ltd. Protective Role of Arginine Against Oxidative Damage Induced by Osmotic Stress in Ajwain (Trachyspermum ammi) Seedlings Under Hydroponic Culture

Assessing the tolerance of medicinal plants is important for planting them in drought areas. Arginine is a growth regulator and its role in plants’ tolerance to environmental stresses such as drought has been investigated. To evaluate the protective effects of arginine against osmotic stress induced by polyethylene glycol in ajwain (Trachyspermum ammi) seedlings, an experiment was conducted as ...

Antioxidant activity, repair and tolerance of oxidative DNA damage in different cultivars of Sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum) leaves

High intake of natural antioxidants has been associated with lower incidence of chronic diseases such as cancer and heart diseases. Thus, there is need to find out the crops rich in antioxidants and phenolic compounds. The aqueous extracts of leaves of thirteen varieties of sugarcane were studied for their antioxidant activity and protective effect on DNA damage. 2,2-diphenyl-1picrylhydrazyl ra...

Antioxidant activity of sugarcane molasses against 2,2'-azobis(2-amidinopropane) dihydrochloride-induced peroxyl radicals.

Sugarcane molasses is a rich source of antioxidant materials with peroxyl radical scavenging effects. To explore the potent antioxidant activity of sugarcane molasses against 2,2'-azobis(2-amidinopropane) dihydrochloride (AAPH)-induced peroxyl radicals, 7 methanolic fractions of sugarcane molasses (F1-F7) were separated via bioassay-guided fractionation and evaluated by oxygen radical absorbanc...
